The deer, rider and floral sgraffito pattern is based on Pennsylvania German Fraktur art and Redware from the 18th Century; with inspiration from David Spinner’s equestrian figures, Johan Adam Eyer’s deer and Friederich Krebs’ florals. The inscription reads “the rising of the sun, the running of the deer • Welcome Yule”; a line from “The Holly and the Ivy”. This rimless plate is hump molded in a traditional red clay body with an iron oxide colored glaze. It has a coggled rim, a traditional unglazed back and copper oxide green glaze accents.
